The Origin of Father’s Day 📜

It all started with a daughter’s love. In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, proposed the idea of Father’s Day after hearing a sermon about Mother’s Day. Her father, a Civil War veteran, raised six children as a single parent, and she wanted to honor him and other fathers like him.

Thanks to her persistence, Spokane held the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1910. It caught on slowly across the country. However, in 1972, President Richard Nixon declared it a national holiday. Since then, families across the U.S. have taken the third Sunday of June to recognize and appreciate the dads in their lives.
